Uncovering the BioMINDS!

February 9, 2008

Hello!
My name is Diego Hernandez and I am 1 of the 100 new BioMINDS.

I am a bachelor student on Industrial Biotechnology at the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez. I am at my second year of studies and I am looking forward to graduate as a biotechnologist and discovering something awesome! The BioMINDS program will help me get new experiences as a researcher which will help me become the professional I wish to be.
MY RESEARCH :

I am working with Dr. Carlos Rios Velazquez and Josue Malave (grad student) studying Bio-luminescent Bacteria using various molecular methods. I chose this topic because I found that the way that this bio-luminescent bacteria function in nature is very impressive and I thought that by studying it, it is possible to find useful applications taking advantage of such uncommon biological phenomena. Until now I have been on various lab meetings where important details about research were explained, such as how to prepare the notebook, safety and my future goals on the current research. I have also been preparing some solutions for future DNA extraction methods. One of my future goals is to develop a molecular tool for the characterization of this microbial group in the tropics.

  1. Thanks for the comment!

There is a very challenging year, but you will overcome this and many other obstacles in your way. Be prepared, and be patient, you’ll do great.

  2. Hello Diego:

Your investigation sounds very interesting! It will be challenging but I know you can do it!! Good Luck with your project, I know it will change the world of science. Take care and God Bless!!!

  3. Saludos Diego!
Te deseo mucho exito en tu proyecto. El Dr. Rios es un buen mentor y se que le sacaras provech si te dedicas a sus ensenanzas. No puedo ver la foto de grupo en tu blog.

  4. Hola Diego!!!
Thanks for sharing the information. Your project sounds very interesting and it shows the great importance of microorganism in our ecosystems. I would be very glad if you happen to find the way to use these microorganisms as biosensors and pollution indicators as it could help us to immediately identify both pollution levels and most important the source of contamination once a disturbance occurs in our marine ecosystems. Is it one bacterium that does it in our coasts or is there many? Are these organisms pretty selective about their mediums or are they present all throughout the island?
